Childcare services and childminders in need of a new laptop or PC may be interested in a new scheme offered by Oxfam whereby pre-owned machines are refurbished and upgraded and then sold on good as new. This method allows Oxfam to offer laptops with good specification for as little as €180 and the money raised goes towards supporting the charity.Below is some information from the Oxfam Ireland website on the scheme. If you would like to view the laptops and PCs available to purchase please click here. If you would prefer to buy in person rather than online, this scheme is available from the Oxfam Shop in Bray. It’s address is:

    8 Quinsboro Road,
    Bray,
    Co. Wicklow

    What is a ‘refurbished’ laptop?

Our ‘Born Again’ refurbished computers have been fully restored to the highest standards and all come with a 6 month warranty.  There’s no reason for you to buy brand new anymore – you can get the same quality of product at a fraction of the cost.

Rather than being sold a specific make or model, the range is divided into three different specs/usage categories.  When selecting your spec, you’re guaranteed to receive a computer of the spec you chose (or higher) instead of a specific model or make.  However, you can be assured that the brand and quality of the computer you receive will be of the highest quality – among the brands we ship are Dell, Hewlett Packard and Toshiba.

So where do Oxfam computers come from and how are they refurbished?

    • All our Born Again desktops and laptops were once business computers used by companies across Ireland and the UK. Business computers are typically more robust than consumer models.
    • When companies upgrade their computers (usually every 2 to 3 years), many pass on their replaced computers to be given a new lease of life. That’s where we come in!
    • Hard drives are fully erased or replaced and a brand new operating system is installed. The computer is then fully tested to ensure it performs the same as when new.
    • Of course, because these computers have all been used in their previous life, it’s normal to see some signs of wear and tear such as minor cosmetic damage, including a few scrapes on the casing. But it what’s inside that counts – your Born Again desktop or laptop will always perform like a brand new computer.

    What’s the catch?

There is none. They are all good.

    • They’re excellent quality. Wholly refurbished and tested, all computers come with a Genuine Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Operating System and a 6 month warranty. All computers also come with Microsoft Security Essentials (Anti-virus software) and Open Office (office productivity software compatible with Microsoft Office).
    • They’re a FRACTION of the price. It’s the same machine, capable of the same functions, and it’ll cost you a fraction of the retail price they go for new.
    • They’re environmentally friendly. No excessive packaging, and not taking up space in an unsustainable landfill. If trees needed computers, they’d choose these ones.
    • They’re helping to END poverty. These are computers being sold by Oxfam, and so every one you buy contributes to our work to end poverty. So they really are good computers.
