He was first elected as a TD for the Laois-Offaly constituency in 1987. He was re-elected in every election until 2002, when he lost his seat. However, he was re-elected again in 2007 and 2011. He was previously the party’s spokesperson on children from 2010-2011.
Flanagan is the son of the late Oliver J. Flanagan, who was one of the Dáil’s longest serving members having spent over 40 years as a TD. Flanagan has two daughters with his wife Mary. (Source: Newstalk.ie)
