A major change is due to take place in the early years sector in 2014 with a move to a registration model taking place in January 2014. Once the related legislation is passed through the Dáil, it will become illegal to operate an early years service in the Rep. of Ireland without being registered. An overhauled Early Years Inspectorate will inspect services against both the HSE Regulations on Childcare and a forthcoming set of standards, which are expected to contain requirements relating to minimum levels of qualification, planning permission and Garda vetting among others.
There will of course be a ‘bedding in’ period for the new system and not all of the information has been finalised (as some details may change depending on how the legislation is passed).
Wicklow County Childcare Committee were invited to a briefing with the HSE in November to go through some of the key facets of the new registration model. It is our wish to support our providers throughout this process to ensure that Co. Wicklow obtains the highest levels of quality childcare possible.
If you have any questions about what the registration process and what new standards entail, please do not hesitate to contact your development worker for your area.
