Childminder Training

To raise the quality of childminding provision in the County, Wicklow County Childcare has provided free government approved training for childminders since 2004.  The Introduction to Home Based Childcare, (also known as the Quality Awareness Programme for Childminders) is a 12 hour course, which looks at:

• Childminding as a Career
• Child Development
• Hygiene, Health & Safety
• The Well-Being of Children
• The Importance of Play, and
• Government Supports for Childminders

This is the best foundation for anyone considering setting up a childminding service, as well as being of value to those already working as childminders looking to keep up to date.  It’s free, there are no exams, and it enables valuable networking with other childminders in your area.

Barnardos have a free introductory course on child protection available to do on-line.   This Introduction to Child Protection course is for anyone working with children. The aim of the course is to give you an understanding of key aspects the national approach to child protection: Children First, National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children.

This new course is free to use and is a suitable introduction for anyone working with children. It is easy to work though and includes quizzes and sample scenarios throughout to confirm your learning as well as links to useful resources.
